One night the Hogwarts Four sat down, writing their welcome addresses for fresh first years. Salazar seated himself away from the other three while writing down his speech and inadvertently hissed out a few words he was writing down. The other three teased him saying that his speech must be one hell of a "snakey tongue".
And that's how he came up with the design of the Chamber of Secrets.
